PCB Origami: A Material-Based Design Approach to Computer-Aided Foldable Electronic Devices
نویسندگان
چکیده
Origami is traditionally implemented in paper, which is a passive material. This research explores the use of material with embedded electronics such as PCB (Printed Circuit Boards) as the medium for origami folding in order to create an interactive folding experience and to generate foldable objects with added functionalities. PCBs are produced as 2D shapes. By folding PCB arrays it is possible to create 3D objects that contain electronic functions. Conductivity, output devices (such as Light Emitting Diodes) and microcontroller computation can create an interactive folding experience, for user guidance and verification of the folding. We call this approach and methodology PCB Origami. The work presented in this paper describes two unique interaction and fabrication techniques for creating and folding electronic materials. We demonstrate prototypes and present verification/evaluation strategies for guiding the user through the folding process.

Design of Infinitesimally and Finitely Flexible Origami Based on Reciprocal Figures
This paper investigates novel computational design method for infinitesimally and finitely foldable rigid origami based on solving a first-order folding mode, which can be represented by a reciprocal figure. We derive these graphical conditions from a matrix representation of rigid origami, and extend the conditions to cases when the surface includes holes. We propose an algorithm to obtain for...
متن کاملClassifications and Properties of Materials for Chairside Computer-Aided Design/Computer-Aided Manufacturing Dentistry: A Review
Background and Aim: Chairside computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) systems have become considerably more accurate, reliable, efficient, fast, and prevalent since 1985 when CEREC was introduced. The inceptive restorative material option for chairside CAD/CAM restorations was limited to ceramic blocks. Today, restorative material options have been multiplied and include me...
متن کاملComputer Aided Design for Single-Phase Induction Motors Based on a New Gemoetrical Approach
Design of electrical motors normally involves two main stages: i) Preparation of the main dimensions and parameters. ii) Prediction of the performance. At the first stage the main dimensions of the motor, core stack Lfe and stator outer diameter Do, must be chosen. A set of performance conditions such as breakdown torque, desired output and other important parameters must satisfy the internatio...
متن کاملOne-DOF Rigid Foldable Structures from Space Curves
We show a novel design method of one-DOF deployable mechanism based on a space curve, through creating a curved folding and discretizing the folding into rigid origami. By interpreting constant angle curved folding as a flat-foldable quadrilateral mesh origami, we design novel irregular tessellated, cylindrical, and cellular flatly collapsible structures, whose behavior is easily controlled by ...
متن کاملDesign of Origami Sheets for Foldable Object Fabrication
Reconfigurable structures that are enabled through the integration of multiple materials are important for future design and manufacturing practice. We investigate one of such reconfigurable structures an origami sheet, which can be designed based on a 3D object and unfolded into a 2D sheet with complex creases. A fabrication approach based on a hybrid manufacturing process by integrating layer...
